NASHVILLE, TN – A group of Tennessee “Concerned Citizens Against Horse Soring” took out a full color 1/2 page Ad
in Sunday’s edition of The Tennessean newspaper letting Tennessee elected representatives and the world know that Tennesseans are against the “Big LicK’ and horse soring. In mid October, the members of TWHBEA, the Tennessee Walking Horse breed registry from all over America and around the world voted 63% to 37% in a landslide FOR passage of the HR 1518 Prevent All Soring Tactics Act.
The law will remove pads and chains from Tennessee Walking Horses, eliminate the corrupt HIO system and make horse soring a federal felony.
An outstanding 26% of the TWHBEA membership participated in the Poll solicited by Pat Stout, TWHBEA VP – Horse Shows. The TWHBEA members vindicated the actions of the TWHBEA Executive Committee in May 2013 which approved by a 7 – 4 vote, the passage of the HR 1518 removing pads and chains from Tennessee Walking Show horses. A “Big Lick” controlled Board of Directors unsuccessfully attempted to overturn the EC. Now the members of TWHBEA have conclusively spoken.
Former TWHBEA President Marty Irby (2010 – 2012) is largely given credit for
spearheading the action of the TWHBEA Executive Committee. Irby was born and raised a “Big Licker”, but during his two years of service as TWHBEA President Irby realized that if the Tennessee Walking Horse breed was going to survive and prosper, basic change had to occur.
Following the May 2013 Executive Committee vote, Tracy Boyd, now TWHBEA Executive Director,
issued a public statement explaining his vote to endorse HR 1518. Boyd cited the financial losses of the breed registry and said, “the image conveyed by our (padded) performance horse is no longer accepted in 2013″. Boyd said the reason that TWHBEA had suffered such drastic losses in revenue was “It is our reputation. It is soring. It is our image.” Boyd said that the Tennessee Walking Horse breed had no friends (in the equine world) outside the Tennessee Walking Horse business. He said “the World Equestrian Games refused our sponsorship and returned it to us”. Boyd concluded his statement by saying ” “¦ when you have lost the public, you have lost it all “¦ and we have clearly lost the public”.
Following the meeting, Tracy Boyd was fired by his employer, Baskin-Irby Construction over his decision and public statement explaining his vote. Baskin ““ Irby was run by Roger Baskin, son of Randall Baskin. Randall Baskin has an HPA violation history along with his horse “Mr. Heisman” and his Trainer Brandye Mills.
Marty Irby will be one of four “Invited Witnesses” appearing before a Congressional Committee in Washington, D. C. on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. National media will cover the event.
Marty Irby believes the following “sound” Tennessee Walking Horses which appeared before 100,000 fans at the University of Tennessee Homecoming football games in 2012 and 2013 are the future of the Tennessee Walking Horse breed.
Kimbrell Hines Up On “A Daring Affair”
Meanwhile back in Shelbyville, the “Big Lick” crowd led by Celebration Chairman and The Walking Horse Report Owner David L. Howard
and Tennessee political “big money” guy Steve Smith
are desperately fighting the measure which would bring paradigm change to the Tennessee Walking horse breed.
