SHELBYVILLE, TN – The Big Lick is an addiction.
That’s really the only word for it.
It’s not a complicated endeavor.
People gather every weekend, and somebody plays the organ, and the horses go in a circle one way, then they turn around and go in a circle another way.
A Judge declares a winner.
Then they do it another 20 – 25 more times that night.
Then it’s over, and they go home.
But rest assured, the thirst is not quenched.
The people addicted live for the next weekend so they can do it all over again.
The Fix is memorialized in a weekly newspaper called The Walking Horse Report where Trainer BOYZ customers pay approximately $750.00 a page to see big color pictures of themselves along with descriptions of their prowess and that of their horses in winning the prized Blue Ribbons. And the Trainer Boyz tell the customers how good they look assure them how much those Ads will help them in their future show ring efforts
It is truly addictive, and it is just as anachronistic as those wearing the fedoras and riding suits as if from another age such as this fellow:
And every time those horses go in a circle, and those Blue Ribbons are awarded, these two guys make a boatload of money:
Jeffry Howard calls it “The Sport and The Horse you love.” The only thing wrong with what Jeffrey Howard says is no one asks the horses if they “love” being “fixed” in order for people, not horses, to enjoy their “Big Lick” sport.
And these guys, who train both horses and people, also make some pretty good money. They are actually more “People Trainers” than they are Horse Trainers. Some of them are quite practiced chemists.
And these people pay for all of it:
They simply live for the next horse show where they eat high cuisine such as:
And enjoy the company of the same people – weekend after weekend – doing the same repetitive thing. Truly, it’s an addiction. Note: When their neighbors ask where they are going sometimes they use subterfuges to keep them from finding out.
And here is the glue that binds the addiction:
HERE COMES DAT FIRST HOSS
THIS BAD BOY MIGHT BE GOOD WHEN HE GROWS INTO HISSELF
And so it goes in these Red States weekend after weekend, from March until the last Saturday before Labor Day.
Everything is built around the next weekend and the next horse show.
Nothing else matters.
Not the PAST Act, not HIOs, bad publicity, nothing … nothing else matters.
Not the future of the Tennessee Walking Horse breed.
Just the “Big Lick” Hit matters. And It’s an addiction, pure and simple.
The Big Lick Show addiction cranks back up this weekend in Shelbyville, Tennessee IN the Calsonic Arena AT the Celebration grounds:
It’s going to be a SPRING FLING and the Big Lick is wafting in the air. Lots of addicts are expected to be there.
It’s Big Lick Horse Show Time In Tennessee.
And there’s nothing quite like it anywhere on earth …. for the addicts anyway.
