MARYVILLE, TN – U. S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) lost Blount County, Maryville, Tennessee where he grew up and the Lamar Alexander Parkway is named for him:
Joe Carr 7,131 (47.1%) and Lamar Alexander 6,708 (44.3%).
As reported here earlier, Alexander lost Bedford County, where the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is located:
Joe Carr 2,819 (49.4%) to Lamar Alexander 2,577 (45.2%).
The rumor is the 74 year old Alexander will not serve out his full term, rather he will resign early and allow the Republican Governor Bill Haslam to appoint his successor.
This will give the newly appointed U. S. Senator an opportunity to establish him/herself before having to stand for election before the Tennessee electorate.
Alexander’s Campaign Finance Chairman Steve Smith who is fighting hard to preserve the sore Big Licker Tennessee Walking Horse will then attempt to anoint Alexander’s successor using his control of the purse strings to do so.
So far, Smith has demonstrated that he has a leash on the entire Tennessee Republican Congressional delegation, except for U. S. Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) who is his own man.
Nephew Eugene thinks the folks in Bedford County and Blount County got it about right.
