Mr. Young was asked “softball” questions by Mr. Thomas:
Q. What different is going to happen this year?
A. “Trainers Association will continue to work diligently to promote our breed in a better light”
- Trainers Show “Feed The Children Program
- Helped Carson Newman College istribute food to needy families in Appalachia during the holidays.
- Donated time to help therapeutic riding program
- Helped Bedford County Humane Society in building a shelter for abandoned animals.
- Scholarship program helped a large number of children with their college expenses
.Q. Tell us about the Trainer’s Show?
A. The Trainers Show this year will be held in Decatur, Alabama. Founders of the Trainer’s show moved the show to different parts of the country to better promote the horse. We’re extreme grateful for the support in Shelbyville. We want to take our horse shows to different areas to better promote “this horse”. I want to emphasize in no way is changing the venue of this horse show meant to be any disrespect to any organzation, any group of people, the City of Shelbyville or anyone else. “We feel like this year Decatur, Alabama is the place we have the best chance for having a successful horse show. Alabama has historically been a strong base of support for our breed. They have a great facility there. they have a strong walking horse group or organization there who have expressed the desire to pitch and help us put on and make this show a success. I feel like it will be a success. One of the bigger things we are we intend to have a sale the last day of the show. Hopefully, that sale will give people a place to get into the horse business. We intend to have a sale the final day of the Horse Show. It will add to the overall excitement of the show.
Q. What is the role of the Trainers Association?
A. …Our most important role is to be proactive in the promotion of our breed and how it is presented to the public. We need to work hard to try to promote some unity across this entire industry (racket) and to embrace and promote all the many different facets and disciplines this breed has to offer whether it be a trail horse, pleasure horse, plantation horse or performance horse.
Q. Since the PAST ACT didn’t pass …. what can the Trainers Association do to help stop performance horse from being eliminated (by what the PAST ACT proposed) What are our lobbyists who are in Washington telling us?
A. I have not had any conversation with our lobbyists during the 10 days I have been in this position. I know these issues are being addressed by the people that are qualified to address them. Any questions you have as to where this process would better be answered by them. I think it’s every important us to as members of the Trainers Association or everybody who has an interest in the performance horse or any other part of the breeds as far as that is concerned and continue communicating with our elected officials and impress on them so much of the negative aspects of what they have heard about this breed from some of he radical organizations have been exaggerated, half truths negative things by the radical organizations are untruths and in some cases are outright untruths.
Q. Could all major organizations with in the industry (racket) get together and create some type of working relation and unity that there is better communication with each other?
A. Small steps. To open a line of communications with TWHBEA. Have had conversations with the Celebration in that respect. We have created a Celebration Advisory Committee. I think a group of our members are going to able to meet with the a group of the Board members from the Celebration and talk about the ways we can better improve our relationship there, too.
MR. BILLY YOUNG A/K/A WILLIAM O. YOUNG SERVED FEDERAL SUSPENSION FOR SORING “THIS HORSE” FROM SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 TO APRIL 30, 2014
Interestingly, Mr. Young didn’t miss the heart of “Show Season” while serving his Federal Suspension because it was AFTER the 2013 Celebration and BEFORE the 2014 Spring Fun Show. He also paid a $1,100.00 fine.
Mr. Young has trained for the Backward S Ranch owned by Floyd and Beverly Sherman whose daughter Kelly Sherman (Patricia Kelly Sherman) has shown horses out of Jackie McConnell and Young’s training operation for approximately 30 years. Mr. Larry D. George is Mr. Young’s Assistant Trainer. The HPA soring violation to which Mr. Young, Mr. George and Ms. Kelly Sherman agreed to a Consent Order in which each served Federal Suspensions and $4,400.00 total in fines were paid. The soring violation citations were issued at the 2011 Delta Tunica Fall Classic in Mississippi.
It is interesting that during his interview that Mr. Young invoked the name of Walking Horse Trainers Founder and first Trainer BOYZ President, the late Mr. Vic Thompson.
The BOYZ were soring Horses in 1969 when the late Mr. Vic Thompson was President of the Trainers Association, and according to the USDA, the dapper Mr. Billy Young a/k/a Mr. William O. Young was still soring them 45 years later in 2011.
