SHELBYVILLE, TN – Dr. Karen Brown, PhD (Vanderbilt University) knows a ‘little bit’ about education, and a whole lot about Tennessee Walking Horses. She detests the Animal Cruelty on display at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration. Dr. Brown graduated from MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) in 1978, and worked in the MTSU Horse Science Program. Dr. Brown addresses the apparently surreal world in which Rust Communications Publisher Mr. Hugh Jones makes the ST-G Editor Ms. Sadie Fowler live.
Dr. Brown has the following words for Rust Communications ST-G Editor Ms. Sadie Fowler about a “News” story that Ms. Fowler put on the front page of Rust Communications ST-G newspaper., and an Editorial written by Ms.Fowler, both on August 17, 2016.
Dr. Brown to Editor Fower: “So, we have Don Embry who “by no means considers himself an expert in the horse world,” and Sadie Fowler who believes that BL horses are treated better than the family dog, but says, “what goes on the inspection area is for the experts to figure out,” indicating that she is clearly no expert, but they are somehow qualified to tell us that the Celebration is good, clean, family fun run by honest trustworthy folks. Right. Because it’s not possible to interview a true equine expert and learn something about horses – like Dr. Haffner at MTSU or Olympian Melanie Smith in Memphis. I wonder if Ms. Fowler would be interested in purchasing some healing crystals and magnets I have in my closet, b/c although I’m not an expert in medicine, I’m a good trustworthy person. I’ll even throw in a couple of donuts.”
Ms Sadie Fowler – Rust Communications ST-G Editor & Reporter
Editor Ms. Sadie Fowler wrote:
- (Her Personal View) – “Though I have many friends and know many good people involved in the horse business and hold the personal opinion that the horse is in most cases taken care of better than most family dogs, what happens with the law, Horse Protection Act, and inspection arena is for the experts to work out.”
- Reporter Fowler quotes former high school principal Mr. Don Embry who is now the Bedford County Superintendent of Education, (speaking of the annual TWH Celebration) – “All of this adds to the economy, the quality of education and the overall learning and social experience of our children We need to do everything we can as a community to support the show,” he said.http://www.t-g.com/story/2331053.html
In July 2008, ST-G Editor Ms. Fowler wrote:
“Why are we journalists?
Why We Do What We Do” .…
It’s to tell the people the truth.”
Question: Why isn’t Ms. Fowler doing “telling people the truth”where the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is concerned.
Last year the USDA Vet Inspectors disqualified 35% of the “Big Lick” Tennessee Walking Horses that they inspected for alleged Horse Protection Act violations.
The Shelbyville Times Gazette did NOT report this fact.
Here is an ST-G Editorial (presumably by Ms. Fowler) – Sep. 10, 2015.
- “So yes, we do believe the industry turned a corner and they should be congratulated for their efforts. We hope it’s a start toward a brighter future for the Celebration and the horse industry as a whole.”
Here is a CCABLAC (Citizens Campaign) Comment to Editorial – Sep. 10, 2015:
“Respectfully, your article is grossly inaccurate. It also does not have a name or by-line attached to it.
The USDA found 35% of the horses it inspected as violating the Horse Protection Act. This is abominable.
Citizens Protestors were present the first Thursday and Friday, and the second Friday and Saturday. They totaled more than 50 and represent approximately 70,000+ people who have signed Petitions Against Big Lick Animal Cruelty.
The Shelbyville Police Department led by Chief Jan Phillips did an extraordinary job of providing security for those persons exercising their rights to protest Big Lick Animal Cruelty.
The Celebration attendance was down by over 25,000 from last year.
The Celebration is in free fall because is based on a foundation of Animal Cruelty.
Unlike professional athletes, horses don’t make the choice to be sored.
Neither Governor Bill Haslam nor U. S. Senator Lamar Alexander attended the 2015 Celebration. They won’t get caught anywhere near it.
That light you see at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train.
Big Lick Animal Cruelty is not the same thing as monkeying with footballs or NASCAR. It is inhumane treatment of defenseless Animals, and until the Celebration gives up the Big Lick, Shelbyville will continue to be nationally scorned for what it is hosting.”
The “Oncoming Train” arrived on July 25, 2016, when www.billygoboy.com reported to America and the World (2,000+ Facebook shares) the USDA APHIS “Proposed Rule” which will abolish the “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty by removing the “Pads and Chains”.

So “Why” is the operative question.
The Rust Communications Shelbyville Times-Gazette has done a huge disservice to the Shelbyville – Bedford County community by not providing leadership to get that community from the wrong side of history to the right side.
Nephew Eugene believes:
- For ST-G Editor Ms. Sadie Fowler, it’s mostly about receiving a paycheck,
- For the Rust Communications brothers, Jon and Rex, they had no clue what the ST-G newspaper publisher Mr. Hugh Jones had gotten them into by being a “Proud Sponsor” of “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty, until Publisher Jones declined to run this Ad:
- For ST-G Publisher, Mr. Hugh Jones, the jury is out on the “Why”. It could just be that Mr. Jones was focused on the “Bottom Line”, and he didn’t realize what he was getting Rust Communications into by championing the “Hometown” Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration which features “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty.
Right now, Rust Communications is sitting on top of a national Animal Cruelty news story in which its two newspapers Middle Tennessee are cheerleading for the dying Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration which features institutionalized Animal Cruelty to a gentle breed of horses, the noble Tennessee Walking Horse.
The Rust Communications Co-Presidents. Mr. Jon Rust and Mr. Rex Rust, know now that there is a problem.
And they simply must do something about it.
Nephew Eugene believes a good start would be to get that Ribbon and “Proud Sponsor” sign off the ST-G door as soon as possible.
Rust Communications might also take note that neither Regions Bank (which is the largest bank in Shelbyville) nor the Pepsi Cola company, thought it would enhance their business image when they pulled out as Celebration corporate sponsors to the tune of $50,000.00.
It will be interesting to see how Rust Communications handles this.
One thing’s for sure, it’s not going away, and it will get much larger in the next two weeks.
So here it is, Gentlemen of Rust Communications.
Please take a GOOD LOOK at what you are proudly sponsoring.
If one of these type Videos is dedicated to Rust Communications being a Proud Sponsor of the Animal Cruelty of the Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration goes viral like these have, then what will be the effect?
These “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty videos tell the story of Gen’s Ice Glimmer, a scarred abused victim of “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty. Here are his feet on July 28, 2015, when he was saved by Horse Plus Humane Society at a public sale in Cookeville, Tennessee on the way to a Mexico slaughter plant.
Here is Glimmer 10 days earlier on July 18, 2015, in the Show Ring.
The story of Gen’s Ice Glimmer, shown forty (40) times in nine (9) years over five (5) states – and then advertised on Craig’s List for $757.00, then thrown away in an auction parking lot like a used dish rag.
These two Videos telling Glimmer’s story have now been seen by over 1,400,000 + persons.
Please watch how the public responds to this Video with the Animal Cruelty with which you have associated yourselves.
