City Of Arab, Alabama Pulls Plug On 25 Year Tennessee Walking Horse Show Featuring “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty

ARAB, ALABAMA – Thanks in large part to the efforts of the “Citizens Campaign Against “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty” (CCABLAC),  the City of Arab (AL) cancelled the “Big Lick” Horse Show,   held in the City’s Park this weekend for the past 25 years.

Arab, AL is a small city located 30 miles South of Huntsville, AL (metro pop. 441,000), which is home of the U. S. Redstone Arsenal.  “The Rocket City”, Huntsville features over 25 biotechnical firms, and is the second fastest growing city in the State of Alabama.

Arab, AL now joins:

  • Jackson, MS;
  • Tupelo, MS;
  • Franklin, TN;
  • Murfreesboro, TN;
  • Atlanta, GA;
  • Little Rock, AR
  • Chattanooga, TN
  • Montgomery, AL;
  • Memphis, TN:
  • Gallatin, TN;

as cities, large and small,  whose citizens no longer wish to be associated with the stigma of Animal Cruelty of Tennessee Walking Horses shown wearing EIGHT POUND SHOES and CHAINS.  Here is a recent CCABLAC Ad from The Daily Herald newspaper in Columbia, TN.

According to The Arab Tribune news reporter Mr. Mike Tankersley,   Arab Mayor Bob Joslin and parks director Eric Hayes decided to cancel the horse show two months ago.  The “Big Lick” Horse Show was used as an annual Fund Raiser for the Arab Parks & Recreation Department.

CCABLAC Animal Welfare Advocate Clant M. Seay said, “CCABLAC applauds the wonderful City of Arab, Alabama, for its decision to “Walk Away” from having a Horse Show which features “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty to Tennessee Walking Horses in its City Park”.

CCABLAC’s recent efforts have resulted in the Panama City Beach Tourist Development Board deciding not to pay $25,000.00 of “Tourism Tax” money to a “Big Lick” Multi-Millionaire show organizer to promote the event, and the Municipality of Panama City Beach advising the horse show organizer that the gazebo at Center Ring at the city owned Frank Brown Park and aging permanent fence will be removed before 2018.

“Trouble in the Tennessee Walking Horse show industry finally caught up with Arab Park and Recreation’s annual fund-raising event.

The show, which would have been this weekend, was canceled about two months ago. The decision to cancel was made by Mayor Bob Joslin and new parks and recreation director Eric Hayes after a couple of months of discussion.

“There just weren’t going to be enough entries (to justify) all the work,” Hayes said. “We had just 53 entries last year. It was by far our worst year ever. It takes a lot of work to put on a show like this.

 “That’s a lot of work to have that low number of entries.”

It may or may not be the end of the show, which marked its 25th consecutive year last July. Hayes said the city will re-evaluate the situation early next year.

“We’re going to sit back and see where the horse show industry goes,” he said.

In the meantime, Joslin has been evaluating the Arab show itself. Because of increasing scrutiny of walking horse shows everywhere by the USDA, entries have been on the decline at many shows, including Arab’s.

USDA inspectors have been at Arab show for the last three years, and that most definitely hurt participation.

“We’ve asked them why they’ve come and we never get an answer,” Hayes said.

Since horses have been the stars of the show, as their participation waned, so did the interest of the public. The drop in attendance has made it harder and harder for the city to attract sponsors.

The downward spiral reached a dramatic new low last year, so organizers pulled the plug on this year’s show and took a step back.

“The show’s been dying,” Joslin said. “We didn’t want it to die altogether.”

To that end, he’s been looking for answers in several directions.”

The Arab “Big Lick” Horse Show cancellation reflects the toll being taken on the “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty culture by CCABLAC’s  advocacy against “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty to Tennessee Walking Horses.

The “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty culture is centered in this “SORING CIRCLE” in Middle Tennessee,  and  it is also shown by the red and blue states on the CCABLAC Past Act Map (below).

Responding to the CCABLAC Campaign call for citizens to BOYCOTT “Big Lick” TWH Shows,   persons living in cities across the South have turned their backs on the “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty perpetrated upon Tennessee Walking Horses in the name of family entertainment and charitable donations or for the exhibitor to receive a 50 cent ribbon prize.

The 2013 “Opinion Poll”  Map (above) reflects the will of approximately 7,000 members of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breed Registry (TWHBEA)  when 26% of the membership voted landslide 63% to 37% to remove the “Pads and Chains” from Tennessee Walking Horses,  and end the “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty.

This video made June 3, 2017 at the Columbia Spring Jubilee “Big Lick” Horse Show graphically shows the Animal Cruelty of concussions resulting from Pads striking the hard surface,  and the resulting “popping-snapping” of Chains on sensitive pastern skin area of horses that is necessary to create and maintain the high stepping  “Big Lick” gait associated with Tennessee Walking Show Horses.

One week ago,  on July 1, 2017,    TWHBEA officer Mr. Charles Gleghorn and the TWHBEA Breed Registry became ground zero of the “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty controversy.

BIllyGoBoy.Com published an article which documents that in March 2017,  Mr. Charles Gleghorn received a Three Year Federal Disqualification from a USDA Administrative Law Judge for two Tennessee Walking Horses owned by Mr. Charles Gleghorn which were found to be sore by USDA Vets at the 2016 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration.  Mr. Gleghorn didn’t contest the USDA  SORE (Animal Cruelty) charges, consequently, he was placed on a Three Year Federal Disqualification.

On July 2, 2017,  CCABLAC (Citizens Campaign Against “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty started this Change.Org Petition.   It calls for Mr. Charles Gleghorn to immediately step down from his positions as Director and Officer of TWHBEA as he is required to do under the TWHBEA By-Laws.  In six days, almost 14,000 persons have signed this Change.Org Petition asking Mr. Gleghorn to follow TWHBEA By-Laws and resign from his position.

A further investigation by BillyGoBoy.Com into the “TWHBEA – Charles Gleghorn Matter” has uncovered new information, and news will be published on this in the near future.

Nephew Eugene says that “Big Lick” Multi-Millionaire Mr. Charles Gleghorn (b. October 1940)  has done a lot of good things in his life.  Mr. Gleghorn, like many seniors,  now has more miles behind him than he has in front of him.  Mr. Charles Gleghorn needs to follow the TWHBEA By-Laws and promptly resign his position as Director and Officer of the TWH Breed Registry, and then seriously consider finding something else to do with his family time than participating in the “Big Lick” TWH Show Horse Racket.
